I am Flora Vano, and today, I invite you to witness the unwavering strength and resilience of women in the face of a relentless climate crisis.
I am the country manager for ActionAid Vanuatu and this week I am accompanying the Rainbow Warrior’s journey to document climate change impacts on Erromango, where my sisters and brothers have been living peacefully for decades amongst the pristine crystal clear oceans thriving with marine life.
Erromango, our beautiful paradise, is under siege from tsunamis, flash floods, and cyclones, threatening the harmonious way of life we cherish. But amidst the devastation, the spirit of our 7000-plus women network shines like a beacon of hope.
Our women, the first responders and frontliners, are defying the odds and leading our communities with unwavering courage. This year we faced twin cyclones, Judy and Kevin, just 48 hours apart, leaving us in a desperate search for survival.
Hear directly from Flora about the moments just after the cyclones hit when all communications were down in this video.
Through the Woman Weather Network, we share vital early warning preparedness messages, ensuring food security, clean water, and safety. But when communication shuts down, our anxious wait becomes a testament to the strength of our unity.
ActionAid Australia’s unwavering support in empowering our local indigenous women has been crucial to our success. Their belief in our leadership has saved countless lives.
Yet, amidst this resilience lies a stark truth. Women and girls with disabilities face a triple impact during climate crises. They struggle economically and face increased vulnerability to violence. Still, their indomitable spirit leads the way.
Today, I implore you to join us in acknowledging the power of women’s leadership in tackling climate change. Let us invest in women, consult them, and involve them in decision-making. Together, we can build a more inclusive and sustainable world.
We must tap into the traditional knowledge of our communities and embrace the wisdom of indigenous local women. Together, let’s create a brighter future for generations to come.
With hope and determination
