Greenpeace was founded in 1971 by a group of brave activists opposing a US nuclear weapons test on Amchitka Island, Alaska.

Since then, Greenpeace has become a global leader in campaigns against the dumping of nuclear waste into our planet’s oceans, documenting these environmental crimes for the world to see.

Over the course of 6 decades, one small group of people who wanted to make a difference, has grown into a movement of millions of environmental heroes across the world – including you.

The use of nuclear weapons – which carry the risk of exposure to radiation and radioactive contamination – has catastrophic impacts on the environment and people’s lives.

Today, the risk of nuclear conflict remains as urgent as ever. But it’s important to celebrate how far we have come together in our efforts to secure a world free from war and nuclear weapons.

What’s next?

In 2025, 40 years since the evacuation of Rongelap, the Rainbow Warrior was invited back to the Marshall Islands. Once again, to stand in solidarity with the people of the Marshall Islands as they fight for nuclear justice, accountability, and reparations.
