SYDNEY, Sept 10 2020 – The Morrison Government’s pursuit of a gas-led recovery will not create the jobs needed to drag Australia out of recession or protect the environment by reducing emissions, Independent MP Zali Steggall has warned. The Member for Warringah made the comments at the Smart Energy Virtual Expo this morning, where she also cautioned the Federal Government against changing the mandates of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)  to allow them to invest in gas.

“Numerous studies have shown that investment in climate-smart stimulus creates more jobs than throwing even more taxpayer money at the increasingly uncompetitive fossil fuel industries that the private sector is unwilling to support,” Greenpeace Australia Pacific Communications Campaigner, Martin Zavan said. “By shifting its focus and prioritising climate-smart stimulus that creates future-proof jobs, the Morrison Government can protect Australian workers and the environment at the same time.

“The pandemic has shown that the Morrison Government can take a fact and science-based approach to health policy and that is exactly the kind of approach that the climate crisis demands.”
