Today Greenpeace announced the release of its Canned Tuna Guide.
The Canned Tuna Guide app sits within the popular, free of charge Sustainable Seafood Guide app from Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) and is a more detailed mobile version of the recently published Greenpeace canned tuna guide.
The app connects consumers with the latest Greenpeace canned tuna ranking quickly and easily. In the ranking, canned tuna product ranges are graded based on sustainability policy, fishing methods, tuna species, labelling, support for marine reserves, equitable tuna policies and traceability systems to prevent the use of illegally caught tuna – a serious problem in the Pacific.
“Canned tuna is the most commonly bought seafood product here in Australia” said Greenpeace Australia Pacific’s Oceans Campaigner Nathaniel Pelle. “But the overwhelming majority of it comes from companies that allow the use of destructive fishing methods. Most shoppers want a sustainable product and they don’t want to have to do a lot of research to find it. That’s where the Canned Tuna Guide app can help.”
