Cassandra Strakosch worked on our “Voices from the Frontline” Pacific speakers tour during her recent internship. She is now filling in for our Volunteers Co-ordinator while he has a much deserved break. Having been personally touched by our Pacific speakers tour, she is excited to introduce an upcoming photo exhibit and forum on climate change in the Pacific.
By now we all know that climate change is a serious threat to our future.
But what you might not know is that climate change is not just a future concern. It is happening right now and affecting real human beings. Our Pacific neighbours are on the frontline of the global climate crisis. The GFC pales in comparison to the GCC.
Having travelled on the “Voices From the Frontline” speaking tour and heard the stories of Pacific Islanders first hand; stories of dying coconut trees, salty drinking water and homes swallowed by the sea, stories of real effects and real people, I no longer fight for a safe climate future for just my children, or my children’s children. I now fight for my neighbours, my friends, our indigenous Australians, for the people just moments away from losing their homes to climate change. These stories re-inspired me to make a difference and you can be re-inspired too.
On Wednesday 16 September 2009, Greenpeace is partnering with the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) to bring you the opening of Jon Lewis’s photo exhibition “Portraits from the Edge: Kiribati. Putting a Face to Climate Change”. To celebrate, we will be holding a forum on climate change in the Pacific followed by a launch party in the exhibition. Both events are free to attend.
