Basic-Actions Training (BAT) are training weekends run two or three times a year focussed on the basics, strategy and theory of non-violent direction action. We aim to run regular training sessions at various locations throughout Australia.

- Sessions will be led by our trained actions unit
- The training covers the history and principles of non-violent direct action, diving into different direct action techniques and skills used in the NVDA
- Beautiful vegan food will be provided and all dietary requirements can be catered for
- There’ll be plenty of breaks through the day and lots of social time to get to know your fellow participants.

If you do decide to become a Greenpeace Activist, you’ll be invited to join our activists network, and be connected with an experienced activist who will invite you to your first action!
Becoming an Greenpeace activist is open to everyone
We’re committed to help with any practical or financial barriers that might stop you being able to join us. We’ll cover your travel expenses to and from the training. Food and basic overnight accommodation will be provided during the training. Training venues are always wheelchair accessible, low-stimulation and prayer spaces provided, and all dietary requirements can be catered for.
We have a zero tolerance policy for discrimination or discriminatory or bigoted behaviour of any kind and seek to create safer spaces for all at our trainings. Anyone acting out of alignment with our collective values of respect and code of conduct will be removed to ensure the safety of all at our trainings.
If you have any questions or concerns about accessing activist training, please contact our volunteer coordinators Bella ([email protected]) or Eva ([email protected])
Is activism with Greenpeace safe?
Although activism does often involve some calculated risks, the safety and welfare of Greenpeace activists is always our top priority. Here’s what you can expect:
Every action is carefully risk-assessed. We draw on decades of combined experience planning actions, and we factor in the current political, public and legal climate. We can (and do) stop actions if they’re putting anyone in unreasonable danger.
Every activist is thoroughly safety trained. Training includes everything from the safe use of equipment, to de-escalation and managing stress.
You’ll get a detailed briefing before every action, including the rationale for what you’re doing, the legal implications for your role, and any other risks involved.
Our welfare team will be on-hand to support you during and after an action. From helping you get legal advice to finding you a lift home. They’ve got you covered.
You’ll be part of a friendly, well-organised activist network where everyone is welcome. We actively seek feedback, and create space to ask for info and support. If you have particular access needs not outlined here, we’ll ensure these are covered wherever possible.
As a trained participant in a Greenpeace action, you’ll have access to professional legal representation if required.
Non-Violent Direct Action (NVDA) is at the heart of Greenpeace campaigning and we want you to be part of it.
After your training, you’ll be connected to our activist network and kept informed of upcoming opportunities.
