Tell the Federal Government to TAX GAS exports
Right now, the government is considering taxing Big Gas exports - send an email to make sure they don’t back down.
Australia is the world’s third-largest exporter of polluting gas, with Big Gas exporting 80% while raking in billions of dollars in profits for themselves. While Australians pay the price with high energy bills and climate damage, Big Gas has been paying barely any tax.
Since Trump and Netanyahu's illegal war on Iran has caused energy prices to surge, the government is finally considering taking action. This is a critical moment to encourage them to follow through before the federal budget is confirmed in May.
Compared to other countries, Australia collects pennies from the gas industry. Nurses and teachers pay more in tax than gas corporations pay in royalties!
Greenpeace supports the call for an immediate 25% tax on gas exports that could bring in $17 billion dollars a year. In the long term, we need a plan to get off this polluting, expensive fossil fuel and onto cheaper, homegrown renewable energy.
Send an email to Jim Chalmers, the Treasurer of Australia, and encourage them to back a tax on the gas industry!

It’s not too late to have your say
- but we have to act now!
We need as many people as possible to pressure the Federal Government to follow through with taxing Big Gas. Our handy tool can send an email on your behalf in just a few clicks. You can send our pre-filled message, or write your own.
Here is some guidance if you are writing your own message:
1. Keep it polite
We're asking the Federal Government to tax Australia’s gas exports. They are not the enemy, so ask nicely and please keep it respectful.
2. Be clear
We need the Federal Government to know: the gas tax is a critical opportunity to protect our climate and put Australians above the profits of the gas industry.
3. Spell out the risks
If the Federal Government decides to side with Big Gas, we are at risk of decades more pollution and environmental destruction, while the gas industry continues to make billions in profit.
Gas Corporations in Australia Export 80% of our gas and pay barely any tax.
Every day people are paying more for energy than ever before, while Big Gas gets a free ride. Nurses and teachers pay more tax than oil and gas companies combined!
Australia's gas corporations export around 80% of our gas overseas for massive profit. Meanwhile everyday people pay the price with soaring energy bills, and climate disasters like floods and fires.
Since the illegal war on Iran, Big Gas profits have soared. If the government had implemented a tax on gas exports after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it would have already raised $63 billion.
