Continuing to burn fossil fuels will endanger countless lives and leave Australia behind as the rest of the world shifts to cleaner, cheaper renewable energy. We have the renewable energy solutions. It’s time to tackle climate change at its source.

Australia:
A Fossil Fuel Giant
Every tonne of coal and gas we burn is pushing us closer to 1.5°C of warming and locking in more destruction. Yet Australia is the third biggest fossil fuel exporter in the world. The Australian Government must listen to Australian and Pacific communities and urgently commit to a timeline to transition away from fossil fuels.
The vast majority of Australia’s fossil fuel production is for export. The emissions from our exported coal and gas, once burned, are more than three times Australia’s total domestic emissions.
Far from winding back our fossil fuel exports, Australia has been expanding fossil fuel production faster than any othermajor producer. We have been labelled a ‘planet wrecker’.
The Pacific Islands are experiencing the intensifying impacts of climate change
The Pacific Islands are facing rising sea levels and intensifying cyclones, hurricanes, floods, droughts, and extreme temperatures - despite contributing less than 0.03% to global emissions. This is climate injustice.
But at the same time, Pacific communities are some of the strongest voices holding world leaders to account and demanding urgent global action to mitigate climate change by banning new gas, coal and oil projects.
As the third-largest fossil fuel exporter in the world, Australia has a special responsibility to set a timeline for the managed wind-down of all its fossil fuel production.
Australia is the world’s third largest fossil fuel exporter.
Help end the fossil fuel era
For decades, the world's biggest fossil fuel polluters, like Shell, BP and Woodside have expanded gas and other fossil fuel projects for profit, recklessly destroying our cultures, communities, oceans and lands without consequence.
It is way past time for Australia to get squarely behind Pacific Island nations and start championing the transition away from fossil fuels to ensure global warming stays below 1.5C. This is a question of protecting the lives of millions of people so we can all have a place to call home.
It’s time for the Australian Government to commit to a timeline for Phasing Out all gas, oil and coal projects
and end all approvals that will undermine that pathway.
