Email Tanya Plibersek and demand she stands up for ocean protection.

Our oceans are dying. They are facing multiple threats, like overfishing, deep sea mining and climate change.

The good news is that there’s an ambitious ocean protection plan on the table at the UN, with the final round of negotiations this February! If successful it could be the biggest ocean conservation effort in history.

Politicians have to care about issues their citizens are passionate about so you have the power to urge them to make your voice heard. Make sure Australia's Minister stands up for ocean protection.

Tips for writing an impactful email

 Keep it personal

Outline why it's important to you that the oceans are protected. The more personalised your email, the more impactful it will be. Make sure you include a subject line to grab attention.

Mention what's at stake

Our oceans sustain all life on earth but they are under threat from destructive industries like industrial fishing, deep-sea mining and plastic pollution. Oceans and marine wildlife need the space to recover free from harmful human activity.

Detail your demands

Scientists have said we need to protect at least 30% of our oceans by 2030 to avoid the worst effects of the climate crisis. A Global Ocean Treaty is how we will achieve this but we must get this over the line as soon as possible, we are already running out of time to protect 30% by 2030.

We need to ensure the right people are in the room at the next negotiations to make the final decisions and get the treaty done.

Ask Minister Tanya Plibersek to ensure that the Australian government sends the responsible minister to attend UN negotiations and push for a strong treaty.

Why we need a Global Ocean Treaty

What is a Global Ocean Treaty?

It's an international agreement – currently under negotiation by governments at the UN – that would make it possible to properly protect the high seas through a network of ocean sanctuaries.

What are ocean sanctuaries?

Sanctuaries are similar to national parks, just in the ocean. They are designed to protect ecosystems from human exploitation, which means forbidding industrial fishing, mining, and other destructive human activities.
