Thank you Murray! Watt will you do next?
Australia has ratified the Global Ocean Treaty!
We congratulate the Albanese government on formally joining this groundbreaking Treaty that will help to protect the world’s oceans.
Under the Treaty, Australia can now officially create ocean sanctuaries in the high seas.
With the first ever Ocean Conference of the Parties (COP1) approaching later this year - the future of the high seas depends on what governments do next.

Tips For Sending An Impactful Thank You
You can send our pre-filled message, or write your own.
Just remember these 3 things:
1. Keep it polite
We're asking the Minister to show bold leadership on protecting the oceans. He has the opportunity to step forward, so keep it respectful.
2. Be personal
Share what the ocean means to you and why you want to see healthy, thriving seas. The more personal, the better!
3. Spell out the risks
The health of the whole planet is dependent on our oceans. Sanctuary protection will help safeguard our blue planet.
The Global Ocean Treaty is a Historic Conservation Victory
The Global Ocean Treaty is one of the most significant ocean protection agreements in history, won after more than two decades of worldwide people power - from mass demonstrations, lobbying, research expeditions, formal talks and campaigning to protect the oceans.
The Global Ocean Treaty is a powerful tool that can create vast ocean sanctuaries that will help protect the ocean, and give animals a place to recover and thrive.

The Ocean is Under Threat
For too long, the ocean has been in crisis, threatened by destructive industries that pillage, trash and industrialise our oceans. From plastic pollution, global heating, fossil fuel extraction to destructive fishing, the ocean is under continued pressure.
Large industrial fishing methods such as longliners and bottom trawlers are destroying the ocean, ripping up the seabed and indiscriminately killing animals like sharks, birds, dolphins and corals.
Vast, robust ocean sanctuaries are a crucial solution to the ocean crisis
The new high seas ocean sanctuaries must be fully and highly protected, free from destructive industries like bottom trawling and longlining. This will give marine life a chance to recover in the face of the ocean crisis. Governments must act fast to ensure that at least 30% of the oceans are protected in a network of ocean sanctuaries by 2030.

AUSTRALIA CAN BE A WORLD-LEADER IN OCEAN PROTECTION
Australia’s ratification of the Global Ocean Treaty marks a truly historic moment.
The next step is creating ocean sanctuaries in the high seas, starting with a first-generation sanctuary in the Tasman Sea. This would be followed by Australia championing multiple high seas sanctuaries across our region.
The Albanese government has the power to lead the world in ambitious and science-led ocean protection.
30% protection by 3030!
Climate change, pollution and overfishing are pushing our oceans to the brink of collapse. Food security and the livelihoods of billions of people hang in the balance.
The Global Ocean Treaty is a tool that can help safeguard the future of our oceans by protecting 30% of the ocean from destructive industries with ocean sanctuaries.
Send your email now to Environment Minister Murray Watt telling him that ocean protection can't wait.
