Tell Murray Watt to protect our Great Barrier Reef and forests
Australia has one of the worst rates of deforestation in the world, killing tens of millions of native animals each year. Deforestation is threatening the Great Barrier Reef, poisoning the reef system with toxic runoff from soil erosion and chemicals, causing coral to choke with sediment and pesticides.
Decisions are being made in Parliament right now about Australia's nature laws, and Murray Watt needs to hear directly from you.

"The Albanese Government is rewriting our national nature law. It is a once-in-a-generation chance to protect forests, wildlife and the Great Barrier Reef. Massive loopholes in our national nature law allow native forest logging and agricultural deforestation to continue almost unchecked. There is a huge risk the government will leave these giant loopholes in place. It's crunch time but we can still stop the damage - only if we act now!"

Our easy to follow script
Hi, my name is (your name), I’m calling about reforming the EPBC Act, our national nature law. Please pass on my message to the Minister.
- I’m asking Minister Watt to support a strong new nature law that closes the deforestation loopholes so our forests, threatened species and the Great Barrier Reef are properly protected.
- Massive exemptions in our national nature law allow native forest logging and agricultural deforestation to continue almost unchecked
- Queensland has the worst rates of deforestation in Australia, which directly threatens the Great Barrier Reef by poisoning the reef system with toxic runoff from soil erosion and chemicals.
Please pass on my message to Minister Watt to prioritise closing the deforestation loopholes as a priority outcome of the nature law reforms.
- Thank you for your time today.

Fight for our future
Dirty sediment, toxic pesticides, and thick run-off from deforested land wash into the reef waters suffocating coral.
Excess nutrients fuel outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish, which prey on coral and destroy large sections of reef.
Pollution reduces water quality, making it harder for coral to recover from mass bleaching.
UNESCO’s world heritage committee has specifically identified deforestation as a major threat to the Reef and has urged the Australian Government to do more to stop deforestation in these critical catchments.

Tips for making an impactful call

Just remember these 3 things:
1. Keep it polite
We're asking the Federal Government to create robust nature protection laws, so that our forests will be safe in the future. They are not the enemy, so ask nicely and please keep it friendly and respectful.
2. Be clear
We need our Environment Minister to know that the future of our local animals and birds is in his hands. He has a once in a generation opportunity to put in place strong protections to save our reef and forests.
3. Spell out risks
If the government doesn't implement strong laws that will protect our wildlife and our forests far into the future, we risk losing the beautiful living world that makes Australia so unique.
