LOSS AND DAMAGE MEANS LIFE AND DEATH IN THE PACIFIC
Every year in the Pacific and across the world, those who have contributed the least to climate change are left to pay the ultimate price for its consequences in the form of loss of culture, food, identity and livelihoods.
Right now parties at the global annual climate conference COP27 are debating 'loss and damage' funding.
It's time for Australia to start supporting international climate finance negotiations.

These are our demands for the Labor Government
In collaboration with our allies at the Pacific Islands Climate Action Network, and the 19 Pacific island nations at the Pacific Climate Justice Summit, Greenpeace Australia Pacific is calling on the Labor government to:
- Rule out all new coal, oil and gas projects in line with the recommendation of the UN and the International Energy Agency, and support a just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
- Put an end to subsidizing fossil fuel industries.
- Align Nationally Determined Contributions with a science backed 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and net zero by 2035.
- Pay Australia’s fair share for existing international climate finance, increase the transparency of climate finance reporting, and re-join the Green Climate Fund.
- Unconditionally support, and champion, the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on climate change and human rights led by Vanuatu and vote 'yes' for the resolution at the UN General Assembly.
- Stop blocking loss and damage finance negotiations, and start supporting them. This must include advocating for a dedicated Loss and Damage Finance Facility at COP27, committing funds towards loss and damage, and recognising Pacific leadership on loss and damage by engaging directly with Pacific island nations to understand their needs in the face of the climate crisis. The facility must mobilize new, needs-based funding to be channeled to vulnerable people and communities.
- Amplify the voices and realities of disproportionately marginalised and vulnerable groups on the frontlines of the climate crisis, including our Pacific family. True climate justice means taking a people centred and human rights based approach to fulfilling our obligations under international agreements.
- Reaffirm its commitment to the UNFCCC Gender Action Plan, its resourcing and the implementation of gender-responsive climate action.
- Introduce legal and policy frameworks to support dignified, safe and voluntary climate migration for our Pacific family.
- Support a global moratorium on destructive deep sea mining.
Tips for writing an impactful email
You can send our pre-filled message, or write your own.
Just remember these 3 things:
1. Keep it polite
We're asking our Minister to advocate for us. They are not the enemy, so ask nicely and please keep it respectful.
2. Be clear
We need to let our Foreign Affairs Minister know: COP27 is our chance to make a stand for climate justice.
3. Spell out the facts
Pacific Island Countries are only responsible for 0.03% of global emissions but are among the most vulnerable to climate change impacts.
Greenpeace is 100% funded by people just like you
