“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
– Margaret Mead
It can be frustrating to live in a world that is constantly making wrong turns. Even more so when there are so many global citizens wanting to make the right ones.
So much hope lies in these people that want to take steps in the right direction. They are people that power change, that spur movements and wake up the rest of the world to what things could look like if we all just took a stand.
They are the same people that believe taking action is our responsibility. Without society playing an active role in holding people of power accountable for their actions, money and greed run rampant.
It’s up to us to call out inequality, to raise our voices when there are abuses of power, to take a stand when our leaders aren’t speaking up in the right ways. While change is almost never instant, we can make little ripples together that eventually make a big splash.
It’s up to us to call out inequality, to raise our voices when there are abuses of power.
Don’t believe us?
We see it all the time at Greenpeace, it’s what we have dedicated our lives to. Sometimes we work for years to get a single campaign over the victory line, but we certainly do get wins. And they are all made possible by everyday people stepping up and speaking out.
Take our most recent win for the tuna industry – we set out to stop companies using destructive fishing methods in order to obtain tuna to sell in supermarkets. The destructive fish aggregating devices (FADs) that major canned tuna brands were needlessly using killed countless sharks, turtles, rays and a host of other marine life.
After seven years of campaigning with our supporters, countless emails sent to major companies, protests outside of business headquarters and a whole lot of tuna-free afternoons – we have finally managed to ensure all of the top Australian canned tuna brands are FAD-free. A massive victory for our marine life and a testament to the power of our voices when we work together.
How can we flex our people power?
There are a lot of different ways, we can make our voices heard (both big and small) and there is still plenty of work to be done – from saving our forests to protecting our oceans from drilling. Let’s take a look at where to go from here.
Consumers are in a position to take a stand against injustices by using their spending power as a weapon.
Pack on the consumer pressure
For big corporations, there is no louder sound than a wallet closing. Consumers are in a position to take a stand against injustices by using their spending power as a weapon.
Do your research before making purchases – does your favourite brand support sustainability or are they failing miserably? Is your bank tied to big oil corporations and all their dirty deeds? If so, try swapping out some of your old companies with more sustainable options and make yourself heard through your wallet.
Help raise awareness
Education is the most powerful tool we have. People need to understand what is going on in our world before they can start doing something about it. You can’t expect people to speak up unless they are emotionally invested in the issue.
Volunteer your voice
Volunteers bring fresh energy to any campaign and the extra hands are always useful. Whether you want to gather signatures for a new petition, get out in the field and help do some clean up work or you feel like standing in on our next protest – the more volunteers we have, the louder our voices resonate.
Consider making a donation
Maybe you’re in a time crunch and don’t really have the time to volunteer on the front lines. We get it, but we’d still love your support. Donations are an easy way to help us continue our work.
When you make a donation to Greenpeace you are enabling us to create stronger campaigns, giving us the resources to do more research and address the most pressing problems facing our world.
Together with your help, we can make sure our voices are heard.
