Activists Blockade Australia’s Dirtiest Power Station

20 May 2009

Seven Greenpeace activists have occupied one of the massive coal excavators at the Hazelwood Power station in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley. Hazelwood is a polluting dinosaur built with 1950s technology . It is the dirtiest power station in the developed world and was supposed to be closed this year.

If we are going to have any hope of avoiding runaway global warming, we need an urgent transition from the dark ages of coal power to a renewable energy future. Closing Hazelwood would be a very good place to start.

The federal government is failing on climate change and is still beholden to the interests of the big polluters. It is up to everyday people who care about our future to stand up for what they know is right. The activists who are locked on at Hazelwood are standing up for all of us.
