Hi I’m Kerrie, one of the activists that stopped the Kooragang coal loader in February this year.
I grew up in Newcastle and believe that we need to “Quit Coal” and we need to do it now! There is no time to waste as we only have a very small window of opportunity to stop dangerous […]

After ten years of being a climate sceptic, John Howard begrudgingly pronounced himself a climate change realist. But while the rhetoric has changed, Government policy hasn’t. Australia’s greenhouse pollution continues to soar as the renewables industry slowly but surely packs its bags and heads overseas. Meanwhile the coal industry continues to expand with the help […]

With John Howard all set to call the election, we rolled out our team of polar bears this morning to trail the Prime Minister on what could be his final morning walk from The Lodge. We were there raise the profile of The Big Switch campaign, the prime web-tool for Australians to express their views […]

Yesterday’s announcement that Centennial Coal, Australia’s largest independent coal company, has failed in its plan to develop one of the richest coal seams in NSW, is a huge victory for people concerned about climate change as well as concerned locals in the Hunter Valley.

The end of the APEC meeting is a bit of a collective sigh for Sydney-siders but a disappointing for those of us hoping that it would be the first meeting in a decade where John Howard and George Bush stopped trying to undermine international action on climate change.

So while 21 world leaders were puffing up their declaration this week - agreeing to take no action on climate change, there’s worrying news from the big melt in the arctic circle.
The National Snow and Ice Data Centre reports that this summer, the polar ice cap in the arctic has shrunk by almost one […]

We have been waiting most of the day for the official announcement on the Sydney Declaration on climate change that is coming out of the APEC meeting.
We were leaked the final draft which looks like business as usual for coal, oil and uranium companies. Which means, if this is the final statement, we are being […]

It is very unusual during an APEC meeting for discussions on a declaration to undergo a debate. Currently, discussions on the APEC Climate Change declaration that John Howard and George Bush proposed are met by skepticism and disbelief.
Clearly, countries such as China, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines will not agree to being […]

The Iemma Government yesterday approved the new 10million ton per year Moolarben coal mine in the Hunter Valley. It is a climate disaster. When built, the mine will emit millions of tons of greenhouse pollution, and makes further mockery of this government’s claims to take climate change seriously. (see SMH article)

At a time when we need to get renewable energy up to scale fast to reduce our greenhouse pollution, surely we’d be supporting research and development in Australia? Unfortunately not, as a new Greenpeace report released today shows. In 2005-06 in fact we put ten times more funds into fossil fuel R&D than we did […]

On Wednesday, Greenpeace and Make Poverty History carted two ice sculptures of John Howard and George W. Bush around Sydney, sending a message to that there is little time left to take meaningful action on climate change and calling on both leaders to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

As I write, 20 student activists are peacefully blockading the Newcastle coal loader to highlight the insanity of expanding the world’s biggest coal port at a time when we need urgent cuts in greenhouse emissions (see coverage on abc and SMH). Yesterday, activists shut down power generation at the Loy Yang power station in […]
